DESCRIPTION: This image is an antique engraving titled "A Man of the Sandwich Islands, Dancing," based on a drawing by John Webber from Captain James Cook's third Pacific voyage (1776–1780). A Hawaiian man performing a dance, featuring tattoos on his legs, a coral necklace, and a dogtooth legging. He is holding a feather-edged shield in one hand while performing. The background displays a traditional thatch-constructed building, palm trees, and mountains, typical of the Hawaiian Islands encountered during the voyage. These engravings were part of the official published accounts of Cook's voyages and served as early European documentation of Hawaiian culture. Note: today, the South Atlantic group is usually referred to as the South Sandwich Islands to avoid confusion with Hawaii.
