DESCRIPTION: This engraving, titled "Arrival of the News at the Penitentiary," depicts a historic scene from 1844. The image illustrates crowds gathering to celebrate the liberation of Irish nationalist politician Daniel O'Connell and other state prisoners from the Richmond Bridewell in Dublin, Ireland. Supporters are shown welcoming the news of the release, with O'Connell departing the prison in an open chariot-style carriage surrounded by cheering crowds.
