DESCRIPTION: George Cruikshank’s illustration was created for the "Comic Almanack" for 1836, capturing the popular, yet often chaotic, pastime of seaside bathing during that era.  The wooden huts on wheels, called "bathing machines," allowed bathers to change into modest bathing costumes in private before being wheeled directly into the sea. Strong attendants known as "dippers" assisted clients, particularly women, in stepping out of the machine and plunging them into the water for health purposes. The illustration was created for the "Comic Almanack" for 1836, capturing the popular, yet often chaotic, pastime of seaside bathing during that era.  Artist: The artwork is an engraving by the noted 19th-century artist George Cruikshank.
