DESCRIPTION: This 18th-century illustration depicts a form of the practice known as Sati (or suttee). While the most commonly known version involved self-immolation on a funeral pyre, this specific image documents a regional variation—primarily found in parts of Bengal and among certain communities—where the widow was buried alive alongside her late husband.
