DESCRIPTION: This engraving, titled Cardinal (Thomas) Wolsey at Leicester Abbey, depicts the disgraced English statesman arriving at the abbey in November 1530 shortly before his death. Painted by Richard Westall (signed R. Westall R.A.) and engraved by R. Walther (signed R. Walther Sc.), it shows Wolsey—once King Henry VIII’s powerful chief minister—arriving frail and stripped of his power after being arrested for treason.
