DESCRIPTION: This print presents the famous portrait engraving of King Charles I of England, reproduced after an original painting by the Flemish Baroque master Sir Anthony van Dyck. King Charles I (1600–1649) reigned over England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution during the English Civil War. van Dyck served as the principal court painter to the King and his iconic portraits heavily influenced the visual legacy and regal presentation of the Stuart monarchy. Charles I is depicted here in fine courtly attire featuring a prominent star of the Order of the Garter embroidered on his cloak, a wide lace collar typical of 17th-century fashion, and his signature pointed beard and moustache style (which later became known as the "Van Dyke" beard).
