Chinese Foot
DESCRIPTION: This C18 image is an anatomical illustration titled "A Chinese Foot" from a model in the possession of Mr. Cruikshank, published in London in 1799. It depicts the results of foot binding, a traditional practice in China where young girls' feet were tightly wrapped to break and rearrange bones to achieve a “desirable” small shape. The practice was a symbol of wealth and status, often referred to as "golden lotus" feet, but caused immense pain, reduced mobility, and permanent disability. The illustration was published by Cox & Co. on November 27, 1799. Note laid paper with plate marks. *See also #5635 A Chinese Shoe STYLE: Engraving COLOUR: Monochrome SIZE (cm): 20.5 x 12.5 CREATORS: PUBLICATION: PUBLISHER: London: Cox & Co DATE: 1799 COMMENTS: Very good condition witjh patina of age SUBJECT: Fashion PACKAGE: Single one-sided sheet in acid-free mount, flat & unfolded inside hard-backed envelope.
