DESCRIPTION: This image depicts the Destruction of the Old Houses of Parliament in London on October 16, 1834.  Cause of the Fire: The blaze began accidentally when two furnaces used to destroy old wooden tally sticks overheated and ignited the woodwork within the House of Lords. Extent of Damage: The fire consumed almost the entire Palace of Westminster, including the House of Commons and the House of Lords, with only Westminster Hall surviving largely intact. Public Witness: Thousands of spectators gathered along the River Thames and on boats to watch the spectacle, which was famously captured by artist J.M.W. Turner. Rebuilding: Following the destruction, the current Palace of Westminster was designed and built by Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin.
