DESCRIPTION: This artwork is a 19th-century steel engraving titled ‘Execution of Mary Queen of Scots’. The print depicts a dramatic, highly stylized interpretation of her final moments at Fotheringhay Castle on February 8, 1587. She is shown kneeling blindfolded, accompanied by grieving attendants and an armoured executioner holding the axe. She was executed following trial after being implicated in the infamous Babington Plot. Based on a painting by the prominent English historical painter John Opie, engraved by A H Payne and published in London by J. Hagger.
