DESCRIPTION: This antique engraving depicts Joan of Arc in prison being interrogated by Cardinal Henry Beaufort (Bishop of Winchester), with a scribe taking notes. The 19th-century artwork is based on a composition by the French historical painter Paul Delaroche. Joan of Arc is shown in chains, dressed in simple clothing, and seated in straw inside her dark cell in Rouen around 1431. Henry Beaufort sits in a heavy cloak, confronting the young French heroine during her trial and captivity, while a clerk stands by a desk recording the interrogation.
