DESCRIPTION: This original print depicts "John's Submission to Richard", an engraving based on an original design by the celebrated English painter and illustrator Robert Smirke (1753–1845). The artwork illustrates the tense historical reconciliation in 1194 when a kneeling Prince John begs forgiveness from his brother, King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart), following John's failed rebellion while Richard was away on the Crusades and subsequently imprisoned. Looking on with concern is their influential mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Robert Smirke made his career illustrating notable historical events, literary works, and Shakespearean scenes.
