Megatherium

DESCRIPTION: This image is a 19th-century anatomical lithograph of a Megatherium skeleton, an extinct genus of giant ground sloth.  Artist is likely Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862), a renowned Swiss lithographer and publisher. Megatherium americanum, which lived in South America during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs, was one of the largest land mammals ever, roughly the size of a modern elephant. Fossils of this creature were famously collected by Charles Darwin during his voyage on the HMS Beagle.
