Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey

DESCRIPTION: This unusual image depicts Poets' Corner, which is located in the South Transept of Westminster Abbey in London. As the name suggests, it is a world-famous pilgrimage site for literature lovers where more than 100 of Britain's most influential poets, playwrights, and writers are buried or commemorated. The text at the bottom of the image identifies several literary figures whose monuments are clustered here:Ben Jonson: A contemporary of Shakespeare, Jonson is actually buried nearby in the Abbey, famously standing upright. Edmund Spenser: The author of The Faerie Queene, whose burial near Geoffrey Chaucer in 1599 helped establish the tradition of this corner. Samuel Butler: Best known for his satirical poem Hudibras. Thomas Gray: Author of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (see #5014), whose memorial includes a "Lyric Muse" pointing toward Milton. The first burial was that of Geoffrey Chaucer in 1400 (originally buried there because he was Clerk of the King's Works, not because he was a poet).Today it continues to be used for commemorations, though space is now so limited that many newer memorials are floor stones or stained-glass panels.
