Prince Alfred Before Pope Leo III

DESCRIPTION: This engraving depicts Prince Alfred (849–899) before Pope Leo III, created by the English history painter and illustrator Richard Westall (1765–1836). The scene illustrates the young prince, who would later become Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, kneeling during an audience before the Pope. Note: While the print text explicitly names Pope Leo the III (and reflects how the event was traditionally captioned in older British history books), historical records indicate it was actually Pope Leo IV who received and blessed the young prince in Rome in the year 853. This composition was originally drawn by Westall in 1794 and widely published as an engraving illustration for historical volumes in the 19th century.
