Richard I in Palestine
DESCRIPTION: This historic engraving is titled "Richard I in Palestine", depicting King Richard the Lionheart fighting on horseback during the Third Crusade . Richard the Lionheart (1157–1199) led Christian forces in battle in the Holy Land, associated with campaigns like the Battle of Arsuf or the Battle of Jaffa in 1191–1192. Painted by the Swiss-French/English artist Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740–1812), this specific version is engraved by A. H. Payne (Albert Henry Payne, 1812–1902), after de Loutherbourg’s original composition (other editions were also famously engraved by A. Smith for publications like David Hume’s The History of England). The scene dramatizes the fierce cavalry combat and heroics attributed to Richard I during the Third Crusade against the forces of Saladin.
