St Margaret of Antioch Church in Isfield, East Sussex

DESCRIPTION: The image shows an antique line engraving of St Margaret of Antioch Church in Isfield, East Sussex, drawn and signed by the artist Richard Henry Nibbs (1816–1893). Originally dedicated to St Mary, it was renamed to St Margaret of Antioch in 1505. The oldest parts of the building—including the west tower—date back to the late 12th century, with significant additions and structural changes made during the 13th and 14th centuries. The south transept houses the Shurley Chapel, which contains a magnificent 17th-century alabaster monument dedicated to Sir John Shurley (who died in 1631) and his family. Richard Henry Nibbs was a well-known Brighton-based painter and etcher of architectural and maritime scenes in Sussex during the 19th century.
