The Dunmow Flitch Trials (1855) II

DESCRIPTION: This image shows inside the historic timber-framed Town Hall of Great Dunmow in Essex, England, depicted during the 1855 Dunmow Flitch trials. The traditional Flitch of Bacon ceremony occurred here, presided over by novelist William Harrison Ainsworth. The Trials date back to the 12th century, where married couples attempt to win a flitch of bacon (half a pig) by proving they have not wished themselves unwed for a year and a day. This 19th-century wood engraving captures the festive outdoor procession forming outside the hall, complete with crowds in period attire, horses, and celebratory banners.
