DESCRIPTION: This image depicts The Folly on the Thames, a 19th-century engraving by artist George Cruikshank. The artwork illustrates a floating coffee-house barge, known as "The Folly," which was moored on the River Thames opposite Somerset House in London (see #2131). The piece was created as the sixth illustration for the 1842 volume edition of William Harrison Ainsworth's novel, The Miser's Daughter: A Tale. It depicts a lively social scene with various figures on the deck of the boat, as well as people in smaller vessels alongside it.
