DESCRIPTION: This is an antique steel engraving of the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) in Venice, Italy, the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal having been completed in 1591. This view captures the bustling life with gondolas and traditional Venetian architecture. Based on the layout, it is likely from the 19th century, after the work of artist Samuel Prout who frequently depicted this scene for travel volumes. Palazzo dei Camerlenghi is seen on the left side of the bridge while the foreground highlights several gondolas (the traditional Venetian rowing boats used for transporting people and goods).
