Contrary to local legend, the property was not named after the famous medieval poet Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales. Instead, it is named after his wealthy and influential son, Sir Thomas Chaucer (c. 1367–1434), a prominent local landowner, royal official, and served as the Speaker of the House of Commons. He acquired the property around 1393, though the contemporary building structure seen today dates primarily from subsequent 17th- and 18th-century remodels. The engraving looks out over Park Street in the historic market town of Woodstock. The Church: Visible on the right is the landmark square tower of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, which features distinct Norman architecture...(2) This 19th-century wood engraving depicts Park Street in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, looking directly outward from the vantage point of St Mary Magdalene Church. The street scene showcases the fine period architecture of the town, situated just outside the gates of Blenheim Palace. Historical Context: The church itself dates back to the 12th century, originally founded by King Henry II as a chapel of ease.
