"Oranges and lemons..."

St Mary-le-Bow church, London in the 18th century
#4602 Bow Church

ST MARY-LE-BOW, Cheapside, London, housed the nursery rhyme bells of ‘Oranges & Lemons’. Seen here before the Luftwaffe destroyed its innards and brought the bells crashing to earth. A long time before, they were said to hail Dick Whittington back to the city, while anyone born within earshot is still considered a ‘true’ Cockney. The tower remains one of Wren’s highest masterpieces concocted after the Great Fire of London.
